Pet Bedroom Idea!!

Hey my fellow bloggers, it has been a while! #MyApologies….. So, anyways, a lot has gone on since my last blog post – the cats have calmed down and come around to the idea of the puppy dog (who aint so much of a puppy anymore!), we’ve decorated out the old pet play room (which used to be the office room if you remember?), and – guess what – we’ve purchased a brand new bed frame!

Firstly, I dunno what got into the cats causing a nuisance that time – I mean they are very well looked after!! I guess it was Angel’s fault – she likes to think she is the leader of the pack (so I’ll just blame her, lol!) …………. Anyhow, the wallpaper in the spare bedroom has stayed up and looks as amazing as ever – thanks to my DIY genius #BlowingMyOwnTrumpet! ………

Oh, and the once pet play room/ old office room – OMG, you’ll never believe what it looks like now….. We’ve only gone and decorated the whole room out, fitted carpets and had a purpose built bed frame! What do you think? (see below pic)

Pet Bedroom Ideas UK

The 3 tier pet bed was custom built by a young guy from our local area – he did a fantastic job! The bed was Kelly’s idea, and it looks awesome (or as the pets say, ‘pawesome’). The pet bed is the style of a bunk bed. We needed a 3 tier bunk bed, for obvious reasons – ie: two cats and a dog!…… Each bed base is the size of a UK standard pillow, which acts as a mattress for our beloved animals. We bought x3 kids fleece throws off Amazon in kids themes such as Minnie Mouse, Toy Story and Sponge Bob…… The fleece throws make an awesome cover over their soft mattress, and make cleanliness a piece of cake (we just whip those throws off each week and give em a wash via the washing machine, and jobs a good en!)….. The three fur children LOVE their beds!

The wallpaper was a bargain, and was purchased from Wilkinson’s. We needed something that was going to fit in with two boys and a girl, and we loved the fun design. Wallpapering took no time at all, and in our opinion – it looks fantastic!

The carpet was purchased from a local store in town, Darlington Carpet Centre, located on Bondgate. We opted for an off-cut (due to the size of the room, and the fact we would have little waste (if any). It was extremely cheap and fit’s the purpose what it was meant for. The cats love the fact they have soft luxury carpet (of their own) to leap on to on a morning, and Hugo (the Chihuahua) – well – he doesn’t know any different!

Unexpected Bedroom Revamp!

Hey my fellow bloggers. Sincere apologies for why I have not been blogging much lately (my life has been flipped around with the arrival of our new addition to the family – Hugo! So anyways, you’ll meet him a little later on – you can even add him to FaceBook if you really want to!) we recently re-wallpapered our bedroom feature wall.

Basically, Kelly and I were out browsing wallpaper for our living room. Unfortunately, we weren’t too struck on any feature wallpapers – other than a desirable cream/ beige wallpaper, which I insisted we ‘needed’ for our bedroom! Anyways, we purchased a few rolls, and made tracks home.

Angel decided to get in on the action – as per usual. God love her, she is soooo cute!

Angel ready to re-decorate again

First of all, the paper was stripped off and the curtains were taken down and put through the wash for a well deserved freshen up. Secondly, the curtain pole was given a polish – as you do! Then ultimately, the wallpaper was hung. Doesn’t it look gorgeous?

And here’s a pic of our new puppy dog, Hugo – isn’t he just gorgeous!?

What we learned 2012!

Well guys, seen as its the beginning of a new year, we thought what better time to reflect on what we learned from 2012. So here it goes!

Firstly, we learned that we shouldn’t get our bathroom flooring laid by Franks the Flooring Store. Initially they did a diabolical job, and then sent the same guy out to assess/ rectify his own mistakes. Needless to say, when the guy attempted to fix his own mistakes – it became apparent he was in the wrong industry.

Frank’s the Flooring Store soon sharp sent two people to relay our black bathroom flooring. They did a fantastic job.

20130106-152158.jpg

Secondly, we learned not to purchase a headboard via eBay. Our experience of purchasing a faux suede headboard via eBay was very disappointing. Not only was the headboard description wrong in regards to the upholstered material which covered it, but also the colour was not as described. On a positive note though, the diamanté crystal detailing to the headboard was very chic. In this instance, we learned that cheaper is not always better!

20130106-152239.jpg

Thirdly, we learned that we love striped wallpaper. Just look how gorgeous our white furniture looks in our teal bedroom. The teal striped wallpaper is awesome!

20130106-152320.jpg

Fourthly, we learned that the cats love to be in on the action, especially when it comes to DIY. Take Angel for instance, she couldn’t resist taking down the wallpaper that time when we redecorated the main bedroom. Diesel is more of the gaffa type, he observes the task in hand.

Finally, other than learning why you should NEVER leave kitchen appliances unattended, we learned that Kelly needed a new door mat for indoor use.

Frank’s the Flooring Store: customer review part two!

Morning guys! How are you all? (feel free to comment on this one). With regards to the Frank’s Factory Flooring, or Franks the Flooring Store – whatever you want to call them, issue well it still has yet to be resolved!

After contacting Frank’s the Flooring Store and advising them that I was still awaiting for the floor fitter to call around and assess the situation, I was advised that the floor fitter would be out within 30 mins.

Over an hour later he arrived. It was the same guy who messed up the flooring in the first place, so I wasn’t very impressed! Anyways, I thought I’ll see what he’s planning on doing. Next thing, he pulls out a silicone gun and tells me that he’s going to silicone the edges. I thought, “You what? Is that going to cover the scratches too like!?”. Anyways, I thought I’d watch him silicon around the flooring, with white silicon, seen as he’s the EXPERT. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I witnessed him siliconing the entire room in one continual line of silicon!

20120911-223116.jpg

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when using silicon you ALWAYS slide your index finger over the silicone to leave a flat curved edge, right? Not with Frank’s floor fitters you don’t! This floor fitter left a continual bead of thick white silicone around the entire bathroom flooring, except for one part of the flooring – I could not believe my eyes!

20120911-222621.jpg
(Remember that major muck up he did along the skirting board? Well this is the only part he flattened with his finger – to fill the gap!)

Kelly arrived home from work and ripped through him. I mean, considering we both work hard and enjoy nice things in our home – she had every right to be annoyed with the guy. He had came in to our home and bodged his own mistakes, making the entire job look like amateurs had fitted our flooring. Check out this picture below for instance…

20120911-222232.jpg

And this one!…

20120911-222321.jpg

I was extremely shocked and disappointed with the ‘so called rectifying’ of the problem.

The guy even had the cheek to tell Kelly and I that he’d be happy to pay someone to lay his flooring in this manner and leave silicon around the edges in this way. Kelly just wasn’t getting through to him, and he blatantly was not going to admit that the work he had done was ‘completely rubbish!’. She then told him to P off out of our home – and she had every right to considering the way he had ‘messed the flooring up even further!’

I on the other hand let everything go over my head and told Kelly that the floor fitter for Frank’s the Flooring Store in Darlington is most certainly in the wrong profession – he should be piping cakes with the way he’s left the silicone! Just look at the state of it!

I will personally be taking a trip down to Frank’s The Flooring Store tomorrow to explain that this just simply is not good enough, and to show the manager these photos and ask for their opinion on the matter… As I am an extremely unhappy customer – and so I should be!

Bathroom decorating: done and dusted!

So over the weekend Kelly and I managed to decorate our bathroom. Decorating a bathroom can be quite tricky at times due to all the edging, which takes time.

I always feel when decorating a room (any room) it’s a good idea to strip the room of everything – if possible! In our bathroom I wasted no time removing all the bathroom fixtures, such as the glass shelf, towel rail, toilet roll holder, and so on. Once all the stainless steel bathroom fittings were removed I removed all the wall plugs and Kelly filled in every hole with Pollyfiller – as we have brand new fixtures. I always like to Decorators Chaulk all edges before we paint any room, as it gives a neat edge and the finish looks far better. With this in mind I went a little OCD with the Decorators Chaulk – oh well! There was one problem area of the bathroom which needed slight attention. The area had a gaping hole where the pipes came out from the wooden ledge we have under the sink. I had no alternative but to pack the hole with paper before filling it with Pollyfiller. Once this was done, it was then time to apply the paint.

20120904-081649.jpg

Seen as we have a narrow bathroom, Kelly took on the roll of painting the walls, as well as edging. I observed and helped where needed – mainly holding the paint tray or passing up the roller!

With the walls painted and everywhere glossed it was time to shop for flooring.

Turps at the ready!

Hi guys, today is just a quick post to let you all catch a glimpse of what i’ve been up to!

20120901-112925.jpg

That’s right guys, I have been on my hands and knees taking up those cheap black vinyl self adhesive floor tiles! It has been a demanding task, but luckily for me we had some turps substitute under the kitchen sink. Remember to take care when using substances like turps, they can be leathel (according to the pics on the bottle!).

20120901-110049.jpg

Basically, Kelly and I are planning to redecorate the bathroom – hence me taking up all the floor tiles (Kelly is working overtime, so I’m on my own carrying out the task). This is how far I have got so far – bearing in mind I am using turps and the fumes are crazy (ALWAYS wear a face mask!).

20120901-111339.jpg

The task itself has been quite entertaining. I mean, I have OCD and I like to be fully prepped and checked before I start such a task – unfortunately I could not find a ‘paper scraper’, which would of made life easier with regards to removing the floor tiles. Instead I have been managing with a butter knife – which actually does the job very effectively!

To remove the sticky adhesive from the floor I have been using a small dab of turps and a cloth. Once I have finished a reasonably sized area, I have cleaned off all turps from the floor using boiling hot water and a clean cloth (Please Note: wear marigold gloves when using hot water!). I have then used fresh hot water, and neat Cif cleaner (or Jif, whatever you wanna call it!) and another fresh cloth to make double sure that all turps and adhesive is removed.

It’s a long ended task but I’d rather the job be done properly, than be left with sticky horrid adhesive all over our floor – like the picture below!

Top tip: lining walls before you paint

Tired of shabby finish walls, and haven’t got the funds available to have your walls plastered! Ever thought of having your walls lined with lining paper?

I love lining paper! It leaves your walls looking smooth as anything. If applied correctly, you can’t even see the joins. Lining a wall creates an awesome blank canvas, and it is the perfect preparation step to take before painting them unsightly looking walls.

I have actually seen a professional decorator use lining paper in one of my childhood family homes (emphasis on ‘one of’, as we moved house at least twice a year!). As a child I asked the guy, “why on earth do you apply it vertically across the wall, instead of horizontally like normal wallpaper?”. He replied, “Because it’s lining paper”, and that was the end of that chat.

Needless to say, the walls, once lined, looked amazing. The paint went on a treat, and the finished result to the periodic built room was sensational! I would highly recommend the use of lining paper, which is available in various grades. Ask in your local DIY store if your unsure of which grade to use. In our old family home we used grade 1400, and it gave perfect results.

Painting tip: petroleum jelly

After watching a recent episode of Super Scrimpers, I heard about a great painting tip!

Everyone knows that paint can be a nightmare to wash off when it dries on your hands. Gloss is even harder to get off your skin! This tip I learned is supposedly the end to all of the above. According to Super Scrimpers painting tips, if you cover the backs of your hands with a thin layer of petroleum jelly it acts as a barrier and deters any excess paint from drying on to your skin – perfect solution right!?

I’m yet to try this method, in theory it will definitely work. However, I imagine that if you over do the application of petroleum jelly then the paint brush will possibly slip across your skin when you are applying paint or gloss.

Have any of you guys tried this method? Did it work!?

Headboard Dilemma: Back to the drawing board… or ‘headboard!’

Remember that headboard we ordered? Well, it arrived safely yesterday. I was impressed at how well it was packaged up, considering we had bought it so cheap!

I arrived home with the 5ft king size headboard, courtesy of a taxi ride via 1 AB. I was dead excited for unravelling our new crystal studded diamante headboard!

When I removed the headboard from its packaging I was quite concerned that the colour was not ivory (as stated via eBay). I thought, hmmm maybe it will actually go once it’s fixed to the bed and once the bed is made!

I flipped the headboard over and screwed the struts to the back via the pre-marked holes.

The headboard was extremely easy to fix to the bed, and it’s always an added bonus when something brand new arrives from delivery with all its parts – wouldn’t you guys agree?!

Anyways, the headboard was fixed to our 5ft bed with ease and when I stood back my initial thoughts were, ‘Kelly is not going to like this!’ I decided to break the news to her gently, via a text message – as you do when you want to avoid someone the impact of disappointment.  When Kelly arrived home, she took one look at the headboard and said, “That’s not faux suede, it’s not even faux velvet – what is it!?” I could tell she was not one bit impressed by our purchase. The colour was definitely not ivory, which is what we selected during the purchase process.

On a plus side though, the headboard was cheap and had all its parts to assemble and affix it to our 5ft bed. The headboard would actually be a real nice focal point in a bedroom with its studded crystal diamante design, and cream/ peachy appearance. Unfortunately the colour doesn’t go with our wallpaper and to be honest, we admittedly did not do very well with this purchase, however it is just going to have to do the job until we get back from our holiday – then it’s back to the drawing board… or headboard!

We definitely didn’t do well with this purchase guys, it looks ‘horrendous!’  I did consider re-papering the wall, but that would mean needing new lamp shades to match the ‘so called ivory finish’ of the headboard, and also a new light shade – the headboard just has to go.  I’m thinking of a plain ivory leather finish this time – I will keep you guys posted of my progress.

DIY: Its a Pussy Cats Life!

Recently Angel, from itsapussycatslife, once again involved herself with the decorating – only this time, she brought along her older brother Diesel.  Not only did Angel help with the decorating, she checked out our carpet underlay and had the final say of what goes where whilst Diesel just assumed his usual pose – muttering on to himself in ‘kitty language’.  Check out the pictures below of Diesel and Angel and their lovable antics!
